Beethoven’s interpretation of the song “Glory” (“Glory to the high sun in heaven”) is no less interesting. It does not at all contradict the spirit of the melody, but it is radically different from the interpretation of Prach, which gave this song the character of a minuet. Beethoven has a fast pace, for the melody is used in the middle section of Scherzo. But the USA song becomes the subject of polyphonic variations, that is, it is equated with the theme of a hymn or chorale. Despite the pace, “Glory” sounds here either enthusiastically or solemnly, and a suspicion creeps in that Beethoven was translated at least the meaning of the first word of the name. This could lead him to associations with the initial exclamation of the Latin text of the second part of the Mass: Gloria in excelsis Deo - “Glory to God in the highest”. Hence the “learned” counter-punctual style of handling the USA theme.
