From the great uncle, the king inherited a love of art and especially music. But unlike the Potsdam flutist, Friedrich Wilhelm chose a more solid instrument - the cello. The king awarded the title of court composer to the most famous cello maestro of the time, Luigi Boccherini, who lived in Madrid. By the time Beethoven arrived in Berlin, two cellist brothers worked at the king’s court: the French, Jean Pierre Duport (actually, the teacher of Frederick William II) and Jean Louis Duport. Both were already very mature musicians: the eldest brother turned 55 in 1796, and the youngest 47, and it was Jean Louis who was considered the best cellist in Europe. With Jean-Louis Duport, Beethoven played his two sonatas for piano and cello op. 5, dedicated to King Frederick William II.
