Otto Wesendonck had long had the intention of placing some house at Wagner's disposal to enable him to work quietly. The composer was attracted by a picturesque hill off the coast of Lake Zurich. He drew Otto's attention to this plot of land, offering to buy it as a whole in order to build a villa here for his family as well. The idea was approved; however, according to Wagner, Wesendonck immediately expressed concern that the life of two families in the same yard could lead to mutual inconvenience over time. Nevertheless, a modest house was chosen for Wagner, separated from the Vesendonkov villa by the road. After overcoming numerous legal difficulties (the site had several owners), the transaction took place. Both families began to equip their new homes and prepare to move.
