Even assuming that Bulov’s musical instinct had changed and he turned out to be deaf to Strauss’s new works and unsuccessfully performed Don Juan (which is doubtful), Strauss’s attack was, to put it mildly, a whim. For all his sense of humor, Strauss sometimes lost it, for all modesty he could be arrogant. These contradictions in his character appeared early and repeatedly declared themselves in the future. There was no open gap between Strauss and Bulow, but a bundle appeared on the connecting strands of friendship that could not be untied. Almost two years passed before Strauss apologized. Bulov announced that he intends to perform "Macbeth." Strauss wrote to him that he was delighted with such good news. He was afraid that "because of his changed views on art," Bulov "no longer feels the same old feelings for him."
