Anton Schindler became a conductor and music critic; he left several of his own musical compositions, but became famous for the “Biography of Ludwig van Beethoven”, published in 1840 and reprinted in an expanded version in 1860. He died in 1864, having a little lived to seventy years. For a long time, Schindler was considered a friend and almost a student of the great composer. But, as it turned out already in the XX century, all the facts reported by Schindler must be checked or evaluated critically. Numerous Schindler’s notes were revealed, which he entered into spoken notebooks after Beethoven’s death. The tendency to fantasize, and even to malicious falsehood, coupled with the painful conceit of the author, who often denigrates people really close to Beethoven before the reader, greatly undermined the trust of music historians to this source.
