It is curious that at about the same time, July 17, 1812, Beethoven wrote a touching letter to a certain Emily M., a girl from Hamburg, who sent him an enthusiastic message and an embroidered bag for letters. The name of the young Beethoven fan remained unknown, but the text of the composer's response letter survived. True, the autograph wasn’t preserved here either, but an indirect confirmation of the real existence of the original letter is a request from Gertel on July 17 to forward a letter to Hamburg that had long required an answer - and at the beginning of the letter to Emilia, the composer apologizes for not answering her right away. We do not know what Emilia wrote about. Most likely, she tried to raise Beethoven over all the composers she knew. He returned it to reality, refusing excessive honors:
