Despite the fact that An der Vin was located in the suburbs, near the market, and it was visited by a very colorful audience, Schikaneder built a building that at that time was considered the most spacious, luxurious and most technically equipped in Vienna. Here you could use “special effects”: fire pictures, natural disasters, flying in the clouds, the appearance of monsters and even real animals - in particular, horses that were brought into the scene directly from the street through a special entrance with a ramp. Schikaneder gushed with ideas that he himself clothed in opera texts. He composed both fairy tales and pseudo-historical dramas (“Alexander the Great” with the music of Franz Tiber, which opened the An der Win Theater). And even if Shikanedera's libretto, with the exception of The Magic Flute, was mediocre, his performances were successful.
