New Model Army - Innocence

I have never been so deeply and terribly shocked as in these last months. Previous experiences seemed empty compared to these last impressions. Shocks, catastrophe - everything had to leave a deep imprint in my soul, and if that especially aggravated the seriousness of my mood, it was the health of my wife. For two months I was every day preparing for the news that she had suddenly passed away, for the doctor considered it his duty to warn me of the possibility of such an outcome. Everything around him breathed death. Thoughts about the future and thoughts about the past were full of it. Life itself has lost all appeal to me. Despite my readiness to treat the unfortunate woman with the greatest mercy, I still had to destroy the last attempt to build a center of family life and inform her about it, to her greatest horror.
