The least reliable, from Parker's point of view, of the people close to Elvis were Mike Stoller (who co-wrote Jerry Leiber with several hits for Presley), whom the colonel considered too cunning, and most importantly, Scottie Moore and Bill Black, whose fault was that they were next to the singer at all stages of his ascent and still had some influence on him. Parker could not stand Scotty for his independent mind, and Bill reproached him for fooling around on stage, risking to distract the attention of the public from the star. From the day that the colonel reduced them to the level of a simple hired staff, he put sticks in the wheels of Elvis’s faithful companions: at first he refused them the profitable advertising contracts offered by ARC and Chrysler, then arranged so that during the recordings songs in Hollywood they were replaced in the studio by California musicians.
