In the library of Friedrich Wick, the father of Clara Wieck, the future wife of Robert Schumann, Richard found the harmony guide Methode des Generalbasses to study it on his own. He took a book with a seven-day subscription fee, hoping that he would cover the expenses from pocket money. Wagner, in his youthful presumption, had no doubt that in a few weeks he would overcome theoretical wisdom. However, months went by, the subscription bill almost reached the cost of the book itself ... Wagner was forced to open his loved ones. Then they did not know that Richard also secretly took harmony lessons from the musician of the Leipzig orchestra Gottlieb Müller, who later became an organist in Altenburg. True, these classes soon provoked Wagner’s rejection because of their dryness and pedantry, which were unacceptable to him, especially with regard to music.
