Karl August Peter Cornelius (Cornelius; 1824–1874) - German composer and music critic, nephew of artist Peter Joseph Cornelius. In the years 1844-1852 he lived with his uncle in Berlin and, as a music critic, collaborated with a number of Berlin publications. In 1852 he moved to Weimar, where under the control of Liszt, his comic opera The Baghdad Barber was first staged (Der Barbier von Bagdad, 1858). In 1853, he personally met Wagner and became his close friend. In 1859-1864 he lived in Vienna, wrote the second opera Sid (1863). At the invitation of Wagner moved (1864) to Munich. The author of several string quartets, sonatas, choral compositions and songs. In one of his letters to his mother, he admitted: “The realization that such people (Liszt and Wagner. - M. Z.) love me from the heart inspires me with more pride than if I had been elevated to princely dignity.”
