The religious romantic poet Alfons de Lamartine (Lamartine; 1790–1869), one might say, organically complemented Chateaubriand, a religious prose writer. But if in the work of Chateaubriand earthly love is still colored in attractive bright, sometimes even cheerful tones, then in Lamartine “the most divine of all human feelings” is inspired by either grief or death, acquiring a tragic philosophical connotation. Moreover, it is the death of a beloved that leads a person to an unconditional belief in the immortality of the soul. In addition, according to Lamartine, worshiping pristine nature, a person worships God as a single life-giving spiritual principle. A beloved woman is a kind of mediator between earthly and heavenly life, which makes Lamartine's poetry related to the image of Beatrice and Dante, as well as to most of the female images in the musical dramas of Richard Wagner.
