Meanwhile, serious changes were brewing in Weimar. In early January, at the invitation of Liszt, a young composer and conductor Eduard Lassen arrived (Lassen; 1830–1904). He was born in Copenhagen, and spent his childhood in Brussels. After graduating from the Brussels Conservatory, in 1851 Lassin received the Roman Prize for his achievements in the field of composition, which gave him the opportunity to make a long journey through Germany and Italy. A personal acquaintance with Ludwig Spur and Liszt inspired the young man, and he turned to the opera genre. In 1855, his first opera Le roi Edgard (King Edgar), known in the German translation as Landgraf Ludwigs Brautfahrt (Wedding Landgraf Ludwig's Wedding Journey), was written. It was Liszt, having read the score,promised Lassen all kinds of assistance in staging his opera and achieved its premiere in the Weimar court theater on May 19, 1857.
