In connection with the centenary of the premiere of the opera, celebrated in 1905, the first edition of Leonora was taken from oblivion, and some connoisseurs of Beethoven’s creativity were surprised to find that the opinion of the “unsuccessful” work is a myth based on ignorance of the original. Nowadays, all three editions, even the almost never sounding second, are published and recorded on disks. The mass public knows and loves only Fidelio - an opera in the third edition, which fits perfectly into the triumphal context of the Vienna Congress. In its final form, the opera acquired a different meaning. “Fidelio” of 1814 is a work about heroism, struggle and victory. “Leonora” in 1805 is an opera about love, overcoming all obstacles. Fidelio is an opera for everyone that can be played even in a theater, even in a square, even within the walls of a former casemate or concentration camp.But "Leonora" was and remains music "not for the crowd."
