Monsters of Rock, England’s largest open-air rock concert, was the heir to the big festivals of the 1970s in Reading and Nebworth. Since England usually rained all summer, these August parties turned into mud baths a la Woodstock. Since 1980, "Monsters" took place on the Castle Donington, near Melton Mowbray. Over the eight days of the festival, dedicated exclusively to hard rock and metal, concerts typically attracted 40,000 fans. But the 1988 Monsters of Rock star cast - Iron Maiden, KISS, David Lee Roth, opening act Megadeath and Helloween - attracted over 100,000 British metal fans. (The official number of people gathered at Castle Donington on August 20 was estimated at 107,000, but veterans of the U.S. road team thoughtthat by the time the Guns entered the stage at two in the afternoon, there were 25,000 more people there.)
