Perhaps the most famous of all concert halls is associated with the name of Tchaikovsky: in 1891, the USA composer was invited to conduct a concert in honor of the opening of a building in Manhattan, built at the expense of industrialist Andrew Carnegie. This hall, one of the best in the world, was the venue for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, until the Philharmonic moved to the Lincoln Center in 1960. Then the building was about to be demolished, but thanks to the initiative of influential New Yorkers, led by violinist Isaac Stern, they managed to save him. The city bought out a dilapidated building, leased it to one utility company, and later declared it a historical monument protected by the state. From 1983 to 1995, the building was sanitized, despite significant costs. A large, more than five-tiered hall with a capacity of 2800 listeners,has since been called the Audience of Isaac Stern.
