As usual, many guests came to Altenburg, among them - Alexander Serov. It is important to note that even such a professional as Serov in Liszt was primarily admired by his performing genius. Alexander Nikolayevich, a passionate admirer of Wagner's work, who became the ideological forerunner of his ideas in USA, failed to appreciate the List-composer. Moreover, soon starting in the 1860s, relations between them clearly cooled. In the last years of his life, Serov did not write to List, and, with rare exceptions, he met his works with an alienated coldness - in contrast to Stasov, who had gone from denying Listov's work to its full acceptance; at the same time, Wagner's music found in the person of Stasov one of the most implacable opponents. The convinced “Wagnerian” Serov did not understand Liszt’s quest,and the ideological “anti-Wenger” Stasov was among his fans.
