Worst of all, from the point of view of women, things are in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which until 1997 was a purely male group, but in the end, with a heavy heart, obeyed public opinion. Since then, women have been present there, but still in a noticeable minority. The scandal that erupted in 1982 at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra when Herbert von Karayan wanted to fire the clarinet player Sabina Mayer, is still fresh in my memory, but the orchestra disagreed with him and insisted on it. In most cases, the refusal to accept women in the orchestra is based solely on prejudice. For the reasoning that in music women are not able to equal men in either artistic or physical terms is devoid of any meaning whatsoever. It’s noteworthy that in American orchestras the “quota for women” is much higher,although otherwise they adhere to the European musical tradition.
