The Nazis dubbed Wagner the most German composer. And the matter is not only - or rather, not so much - in his anti-Semitism. After all, several other cultural figures, not just Wagner, were anti-Semites. But even taking into account the dark years of the rule of the Third Reich, it is simply criminal to put an equal sign between the concepts of “German” and “anti-Semite”. Yes, it was convenient for the Nazis to raise the name of Wagner to the banner, and to this he himself gave the premises. The leaders of the Third Reich could be attracted only by external, superficial “attributes”: appeal to the Germanic epic, revival of the Germanic spirit to the hymnic “flight of the Valkyries”, Siegfried as the personification of the “true Aryan”, etc. But the deep supranational essence of Wagnerian art is not at all in this . The Nazis could not become the enlightened reformed public for which Wagner wrote, and thereforehad no right to appropriate - and thereby belittle - his genius!
