The real Guns N 'Roses finished the tour and were in a state of shock. In January 1989, Axl forced Alan Niven to fire most of the road crew and almost everyone who had worked with the group before: security, stage work, photographers, and stylists. It was rumored that Axl also wanted to fire Alan Niven, who had not recovered from the Aerosmith tour and was now disgraced by Geffen, but Axl was dissuaded by lawyers. Jeff Fenster, then a member of the Geffen Records artist department, said that Axl wanted to fire Tom Zoutout as well. Fenster and others believed that Axl needed fresh ears from the label to get them to work on their next Guns album. But Zutaut helped Fenster get a job at Geffen, and Fenster was not about to betray him. (He also knew how to work with the masterful Axl, who,in his opinion, was a genius, but completely unpredictable.)
