As we now know from Beethoven’s correspondence published only in 1957 with Josephine Dame, it was she, and not her sister Teresa, who was the subject of his love in 1804–1807. Judging by the diaries, Teresa later regretted that her sister had given up her happiness for the benefit of the children. Moreover, Teresa acknowledged that Josephine and Beethoven were “made for each other.” Perhaps Teresa felt a bit of remorse, as she herself contributed to their separation. Why did Teresa, knowing how it really was, suddenly start fantasizing about her romance with Beethoven? An elderly venerable lady who never married and devoted herself to charity and raising orphans in Hungary, she could mentally “rewrite” the history of her youth, imagining herself a genius muse, and at the same time protecting the posthumous reputation of the “stumbling” sister.But neither 1806 nor 1807 were related to the mysterious writing.
