After a memorable dinner at my house, I have not seen La Falterona for more than a year. She went on a long tour of South America and returned to the Riviera only at the end of summer. One evening she invited me to dine with her. We were alone, except for her secretary companion, an Englishwoman named Miss Glazer, whom La Falterona treated horribly - intimidating her, beating and scolding, but without which she could not take a step. Miss Glaser was a haggard lady of about fifty with gray hair and a yellowish wrinkled face. She knew everything about La Falterone. She both adored and hated her. She could have a few words on her account, sometimes slowly from the great singer and her admirers she copied her - I have never seen anything funnier in my life. But she watched her like a mother. It’s she, acting with the help of flattery, now in the open,forced La Falteron to do the right thing. She wrote the memoirs of the singer abounding with errors.
