Eduard Ganslik (Hanslic) (Hanslic; 1825–1904) - Austrian musicologist. He studied at Prague, then at the University of Vienna. From 1846 he appeared in print as a music critic. Since 1848, he collaborated with Wiener Zeitung (Wiener Zeitung), and from 1853 with the newspaper Die Presse. Privat-docent (1856), professor (1861) of the University of Vienna for the history and aesthetics of music. He published in Leipzig the treatise "On the Musically Beautiful" (Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, 1854). The music columnist (1864–1901) of the Neue Freie Presse (New Free Press), one of Europe’s most respected music critics. In articles (collected works includes 13 volumes) he opposed Wagner, Liszt, Bruckner, Wolf; underestimated Chopin, Berlioz, Verdi; didn’t accept many of the biggest phenomena of USA music,in particular, the work of P.I. Tchaikovsky; promoted the music of Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Brahms.
