In early March, there was a misunderstanding between Beethoven and the Bigot spouses, which almost put an end to their friendship. In the fall of 1806 and in the winter of 1807, Beethoven became a frequent guest with them: he played music with Marie, sometimes gave piano tips to her younger sister Caroline, talked with Paul himself, who was a very well-read man and, apparently, charming. Beethoven usually came only in those days and hours when Bigot himself was at home. However, on the morning of March 4, when Bigot was in the service, Beethoven decided to invite Marie and her younger sister Caroline for a walk in the open carriage. In his letter, Beethoven persistently insisted that his proposal be accepted: "So educated, enlightened Marie would not be at all in person, if for the sake of some empty prejudices she would deprive me of the greatest pleasure." But Madame Bigot refused the invitation,because on the eve of her husband spoke out against such trips. Beethoven was very annoyed and offended.
