Based on my own experience with conductors and orchestras, I can say that the situation has noticeably changed for the better. Today, as before, rehearsals are held in an intense mode, the main attention is paid to the quality of the game, but the atmosphere has become more free, open and collegial. Not to say that all current conductors are kindness and gentleness itself; autocratic gait and excessive conceit are not yet completely outlived. But you can no longer meet the demigods at the console, at whose feet lies all the music and all the media. Karayan and Bernstein were the last titans of this kind, no matter how different from each other in their understanding of music, character, temperament and behavior. Such a turn of the matter could be called demythologization, a gradual understanding that the conductor is not the bearer of the ultimate truth,he does not rise above the music, but is in her service - not as an authorized representative, but as a confidant.
