The collapse of Royal Recording, a small recording studio that did not last long in 1948, frightened off the brave entrepreneurs who were thinking of getting involved in this adventure. The creation of a studio for professional music recording was complicated by the fact that avid producers used the equipment of radio stations. Despite all the difficulties, Sam Phillips embarked on this path in the fall of 1949, deciding to open a studio. To get started, he borrowed money from a friend, rented a small retail space on Union Avenue for $ 150 a month, and bought an inexpensive console for mixing, an engraver for dubbing acetate discs, and a Presto tape recorder. Memphis Recording Service officially opened in January next year under the motto “Records Everything, Everywhere and Always.” Phillips invented it himself. He tried to buy portable equipment,because at first the basis of his clientele was the urban elite, for whom he recorded weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs on order.
