On August 14, Wagner finally arrived in Vienna, where he was waiting for a severe disappointment: the tenor Alois Ander, whom he predicted to play the role of Tristan, suddenly became seriously ill and rehearsals were temporarily postponed, since he could not be replaced. Weeks passed, Wagner was weighed down by his inaction. He tried to turn to other singers, in particular to the faithful and tried Tikhachek. He could not come to Vienna, but reminded the composer of the young and talented singer Ludwig Schnorre von Karolsfeld, whom he recommended to his attention back in 1856. However, Wagner had a prejudice against Schnorr - he heard rumors that he considered the third act of Tristan to be unfeasible - and did not even offer him to take part in the play. True,very soon he was able to appreciate the talent of the singer and this prejudice was replaced by the most cordial friendship. In the meantime, hopes for staging "Tristan" were melting every day. Meanwhile, more than three months have passed already!
