Six days after the premiere of Valkyrie on July 2, Wagner completed the instrumentation of the first act of Twilight of the Gods. Almost at the same time he completed his new literary work, which received a simple and concise and at the same time much-spoken title in his mouth - “Beethoven”. The heir to the Beethoven traditions in this case largely speaks on behalf of the “great Ludwig” and sums up a peculiar result of his own musical creativity. Undoubtedly, this work reveals the essence of not so much Beethoven art as Wagnerian art itself. And at the same time, figurative and inspirational descriptions of Beethoven's works, such as the Ninth Symphony, quartet No. 14 cis-moll op. 131 and especially the overture No. 3 of Leonora, which, according to Wagner, contains “the most perfect drama”,are vivid pages of the Wagnerian literary heritage. The comparison of Beethoven and Shakespeare, two masters of “dramatic characters,” is of undoubted interest.
