Usually, when speaking about Feuerbach’s influence on Wagner, optimism and materialism were paramount, losing sight of what, in our opinion, was the most attractive for Wagner in this philosophy. We have in mind Feuerbach's attitude towards love and compassion. Without delving into Feuerbach’s philosophy, one can simply quote an excerpt from his article cited in the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary: “Love for other living beings, solidarity with them reveal to me true, real being:“ love is a true ontological proof of the existence of an object outside of our thought - and there is no other evidence of being, except for love and sensation “... Even the tragic death of an individual - self-sacrifice - can be associated with a happy consciousness flowing from of benefit to others. " Isn't this Feuerbach’s "ethics of love"Wagner's intuitive feeling became fundamental to him when writing a dedication to “The Work of the Art of the Future”?
