A new disc (discovered now in 1993) refuted the theory that Elvis sang only for relatives and friends until success came. The chronology of the events of that period of his life, about which there is little documentary evidence, is difficult to recreate with all accuracy, but some eyewitnesses, including his then-girlfriend Dixie Locke, whom he met in church, indicate that he did not miss a single opportunity to sing before the public, although they were rare. One evening, Elvis was invited to sing at Memphis' High Hat Sapper Club along with Eddie Bond's Stompers, a hillbilly group; he traveled to Fraser, located a few kilometers from Memphis, and participated in amateur competitions at Doc's Roadhouse; some talk about the local radio contests he recorded for,if there was free time after work, others claim that they once heard him singing on the Memphis campus: his task was to attract donors to donate blood.
