Nikolai Borisovich Golitsyn (1794–1866) came from a very noble and extremely ramified princely family. His parents were Lieutenant General Boris Andreyevich Golitsyn and Anna Alexandrovna, nee Bagration, Tsarevna Gruzinskaya (the famous commander Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration was her relative and friend of Boris Andreyevich). Golitsyn recalled that in 1804-1806 he was with his mother in Vienna and, as a child, remembered the appearance of old Haydn. At that time, the Golitsyn family did not intersect with Beethoven, and Nikolai Borisovich met his music much later. As a boy, Nikolai began to study playing the cello, but a young man from such a noble family should choose a military career, following in the footsteps of his father and older brothers, as well as having such a hero-relative as Bagration before his eyes.In 1806, the twelve-year-old Nicholas was assigned to the Page Corps, a court school in St. Petersburg, which was turned in 1802 by Alexander I into a “nursery” for the future officer elite.
