Beethoven's “Heroic Symphony” was performed at the first concert of the Philharmonic Society and Wagner's success as a conductor exceeded his wildest expectations. At the next concert, it was decided to play the Beethoven Ninth Symphony and excerpts from the works of Wagner himself. However, this time Wagner was faced with such implacable and largely unfair criticism from the London press - in particular, the Times reviewers, whom he once again did not show due respect for - that he even thought about abandoning further concerts and leaving London. But, considering that such a move would be perceived as cowardly flight, he decided to continue the struggle and was soon rewarded. At the seventh concert was attended by Queen Victoria herself with Prince Albert. The queen expressed a desire to listen to the overture to the Tannhäuser,after which, at her personal request, Wagner was introduced to her and her husband. From a warm conversation with the crowned admirers of his talent, Wagner left the most pleasant impression.
