The news of the death of Joseph II sharply stirred Bonn, although the emperor's hopeless state of health was spoken about already from the beginning of winter. Joseph knew that he was dying, and saw that the Vienna court was eagerly awaiting his departure, dreaming of bringing the inevitable change of power closer, in order to finally put an end to hateful reforms. The most sober minds understood that it would not be possible to set back the clock of history - one could not even think about restoring serfdom and many feudal privileges or abolishing a patent on religious tolerance - but from this understanding, hatred of Joseph became only more fierce and poisonous. Even the peace laid upon the dying, the emperor was deprived. Until the very last days and hours, they demanded that he sign one paper, then another - and he dutifully signed, surrendering almost everything,that he considered the main accomplishments of his life and his ten-year single-handed reign ... Joseph himself composed the epitaph: "Here lies the sovereign, whose intentions were pure, but he was not destined to see the success of any of his undertakings."
