I doubted that these three knew my repertoire or that they were told something by names such as Ades, Turneydzh, Takemitsu, Kurtag, Lindbergh or Mueller-Wieland. But I still listed them, composers of the XX and XXI centuries, writing modern music. At my concerts I played many of their compositions. When I said that in America I had a chance to play with Stuart Copeland, the former drummer of The Police, and with other pop stars, they came to life. They wanted to know how this new music was perceived. Is it worrying and is it even understandable? Without preparation, most likely not, I said, referring to my own experience. New music is a completely different music, not like old music. Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms wrote tonal music, it is well perceived by ear, without requiring prior preparation. To understand it, you do not need to be an expert.With modern music is not so. It is much more difficult and often requires more stress. For example, dissonances interfere with our perception when they arise and remain, not dissolving into a calm sound.
