August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (Fallersleben; 1798–1874) - German poet and Germanist. In order not to be confused with other writers who bore the common German surname Hoffmann, he took a creative pseudonym for the name of his native city of Fullersleben (now Wolfsburg). He studied theology at the University of Gottingen. After familiarizing himself with the works of J. Grimm, he decided to study German literature and philology, and wrote (1836) the scientific work The Fundamental Principles of German Philology (Die deutsche Philologie im Grundriss). In 1841 he composed the national anthem "Germany Above All" (Deutschland, Deutschland über alles), which received recognition only in the Bismarck era. After the revolutionary events of 1848 he moved to Weimar, where he began to publish the Weimar Yearbooks of the German Language (Weimarische Jahrbücher für deutsche Sprache).In 1860, through the mediation of Liszt, he received the post of librarian of the Duke Victor I of Ratiborsky at Corvey Castle. He published a number of works, in particular, “Songs of Landsknechts” (Lieder der Landsknechte, 1868) and “50 Children's Songs” (Fünfzig Kinderlieder, 1866).
