Well, if the tours were thoroughly prepared and in the city where the wandering artist arrived, he was already waiting. Even better, if the guest performer had weighty letters of recommendation. But still, there was a lot of trouble. A public concert usually required permission from the police or the municipality. If pieces with text were performed, they were subject to censorship, as were posters. Well, and everything else: a hotel, an instrument, an orchestra, payment for lighting and copyists of notes, posters, newspaper ads, visits to influential people and local colleagues. Tickets also had to be traded directly in your hotel. Sometimes with a virtuoso there was an assistant who took upon himself at least part of these burdens. Some musicians toured in duets. It could be brothers (Beethoven’s friends - Romberg’s cousins), sisters (Constance Mozart and her sister,prima donna Aloysia Lange), spouse (violinist Ludwig Spor and his wife Doretta, harpist), teacher and student (Muzio Clementi with John Field). The lonely guest performer had, of course, more difficult. But in case of success, the entire fee went to him only.
