Its history began back in 1633, when an epidemic of "black death" - the plague - erupted in Bavaria. Residents of Oberammergau made a promise: if the plague bypasses their village, to give amateur performances on the Passion of Christ every ten years on Easter week. Not a single person in the village fell ill, and the inhabitants began to honestly fulfill the vow. Performances were given right in the open. The performance lasts about six hours; About 1,400 amateur actors take part in it, and all of them must be local residents - wood carvers, bakers, shepherds, builders - or members of their families.The next “Passion Festival" took place just in 1870, and Liszt felt the need to touch the "religion of the people." In addition, after the end of his own oratorio "Christ", this topic still did not release the author and aroused keen interest in its other incarnations.
