Robert Schumann (1810–1856) - one of the most significant composers of the first half of the 19th century, conductor, music critic, teacher. Already at the age of ten, he began to compose music, early joined also professional literary work, composing articles for the encyclopedia published by his father’s publishing house. In 1830 he began to take professional piano lessons from F. Wick and composition from G. Dorn. The thought of becoming a professional pianist had to be abandoned after Schumann injured his arm. Then he seriously engaged in composition and at the same time musical criticism. In 1834, he founded one of the most influential musical periodicals - The New Music Magazine, which had a huge impact on the development of musical art in Germany. For many years, he himself wrote articles in it under various pseudonyms,struggled with philistines, their limitations and backwardness slowed down the development of music. Schuman called the circle of like-minded friends around the magazine “Davidsund” (after the biblical king David, who defeated the Philistines). In 1840, the University of Leipzig awarded Schumann the title of Doctor of Philosophy.
