We parted, and after a week or two I went home. That was in May. In early June, I received a letter from Peter Melrose in which he asked if I seriously invited him to spend several days with me and whether he could arrive at such and such a time. Of course, then I spoke seriously, but now, a month later, I only remembered that he was an arrogant, poorly educated young man whom I had only seen twice and who was not interested in the slightest degree, and now I did not want him to come. It seemed to me that, most likely, there would be a green longing with him. I lived a very measured life and met with few people. And I thought that if it turns out to be as rude as I know it can be, and as a host I have to restrain myself, it will be too much stress for my nervous system. I already imaginedhow my patience bursts and I call to collect his things and give the car, and so that after half an hour his spirit was not here. But nothing could be done. If he lives with me a little, he will save on a table and an apartment, and if he is exhausted and unhappy, as he writes about it, perhaps all of this will do him good. I sent a telegram, and he arrived soon.
