A rational explanation for what I am talking about does not exist. All attempts to explain this phenomenon end with the words “charisma”, “aura” or “magic”, that is, concepts that do not have an exact definition, do not fix details, but only mean something large and holistic. But behind this are intelligence and reason, subtle mind and intuition, inspiration and rich experience, including life. In a film about great conductors, one drummer of the Berlin Philharmonic told how he once participated in a rehearsal with one not-so-gifted conductor. He had a long pause, so he studied the score of the composition. Suddenly, he noticed that the sound of the orchestra was transformed, became more intense and warm. Looking up from the notes, he saw that Wilhelm Furtwengler had entered the room. His presence alone was enoughto inspire musicians and change the quality of the game. The titans of the conductor’s stick, to which Furtwängler belonged, recognized and tried almost everything that music carries, they plunged into the score again and again, without losing the ability to cast doubt on old beliefs and admire new discoveries. Accordingly, they gave much to the orchestras.
