Chief conductor of the Pest National Theater (1838–1890). In 1853–1871 he headed the orchestra of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, from 1868 he led the All-Hungarian Association of Choral Societies. The author of numerous piano pieces, including The Rakoczi March, choral songs. The author of the anthem of Hungary (1844) to the words of Ferenc Kölchei (Kölcsey; 1790–1838). One of the strongest Hungarian chess players of the mid-19th century, founded (1859) the first chess club in Pest and led it until the end of his life.
