Ferenc Erkel (Erkel; 1810–1893) - Hungarian composer, conductor, pianist, teacher. Received a musical education in Bratislava, in 1835 he moved to Pest. Chief conductor of the Pest National Theater (1838–1890). In 1853–1871 he headed the orchestra of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, from 1868 he led the All-Hungarian Association of Choral Societies. The first director and piano professor at the Hungarian Academy of Music. In 1872, together with Liszt, he achieved the construction of a new building of the Hungarian State Opera (erected in 1884; in front of the main entrance are statues of Erkel and Liszt). Founder of the Hungarian National Opera. Among his best works are the operas Maria Batori (Bátori Mária, 1840), Laszlo Hunyadi (Hunyadi László, 1844), Bank Ban (Bánk bán, 1861), The Doge's György (Dózsa György, 1867),“Nameless Heroes” (Névtelen hösök, 1880), “King Stephen” (István király, 1885). The author of numerous piano pieces, including The Rakoczi March, choral songs. The author of the anthem of Hungary (1844) to the words of Ferenc Kölchei (Kölcsey; 1790–1838). One of the strongest Hungarian chess players of the mid-19th century, founded (1859) the first chess club in Pest and led it until the end of his life.
