Bad forebodings did not deceive Beethoven. Ticket prices were not increased (this also required police permission). The Leipzig-based Universal Musical Newspaper, having placed an enthusiastic review of the concert in issue 27 for 1824, also reported that the composer received an extremely modest fee: the total collection was 2200 florins, of which a thousand were owed to the administration of the theater, and 700 florins corresponded to the notes, incidental expenses - another 200, so the author got only 300 florins. This information, undoubtedly, became known to the editors from people close to Beethoven, since the composer recorded the remainder of 310 florins in a conversation notebook (later corrected by 336). As Karl Heinz Köhler calculated, “in the summer season in Baden, Beethoven would have had this amount for only a month and a half, provided that he would have rented only one room.For this money, you could buy five pairs of trousers, one hundred bottles of cheap wine, a centner of sugar and ten pounds of coffee. ” According to Schindler, when Beethoven found out about such a deplorable financial result, his legs gave way and he fell into a state of shock. A few years of work on the Mass and the symphony, several months of grueling work on the preparation of the concert - but in the end the amount that looked simply humiliating.
