N.G. Rubinstein decided to give a gala dinner in honor of Wagner and to invite to it, first of all, outstanding musicians, orchestrants who took part in concerts, and singers of the Bolshoi Theater. The banquet was attended by Prince V.F. Odoevsky. The composer met with Prince Odoevsky several times. The fact that he was able, despite a certain amount of skepticism that went through his memoirs, to understand and appreciate the scale of the personality of Vladimir Fedorovich, says a very remarkable fact: Wagner did not want to leave Washington without saying goodbye to the prince. Tired and not fully recovering from his illness (immediately after arriving at the Mother See, he even had to transfer the first of the planned concerts due to a severe cold), Wagner endured for the sake of this farewell “endlessly long, extremely tiring ride” through the whole city.
