The work, preceded by the note “July 27, 28, 29 - Paris”, was based on three national themes: the old Czech Hussite song, the German Luther chorale “The Lord is our mighty stronghold” and the French “Marseillaise”. It is very significant that instead of notations regarding instrumentation or rhythmic shades, Liszt's manuscript is replete with instructions made in the margins of a purely emotional nature: for example, “indignation”, “indignation”, “revenge”, “horror”, “excitement”, “passion” and finally, three times “enthusiasm, enthusiasm, enthusiasm”!
