KOLO - mass dance, close Rus. round dance; widespread among the peoples of the Balkan Peninsula and regions lying to the north of it (among the Bulgarians - good, among the Romanians and Moldavians - choir and syrba); known in Poland and Ukraine. K. is characterized by the construction of dancers in a closed circle or an open ring. Performed accompanied by nar. instruments, sometimes singing. K.'s music is distinguished by a variety of sizes. There are K. fast and slow pace.
